Dal Bhat (Nepalese Lentil Curry)

  • 2 tbsps Ghee or olive oil
  • 1 White Onion finely chopped
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp Grated Ginger or ginger paste
  • 1 tsp Coriander
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1 cup Red Lentils rinsed
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsps Cilantro finely chopped
  • 2 cups Cooked White Rice 1 tbsp set aside for garnish


  • Heat ghee in a heavy-bottom pan over medium heat and sauté white onions until translucent.
  • Turn heat to low and add garlic, ginger, coriander, chili powder, and turmeric. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add lentils and mix well to combine.
  • Add water and salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until lentils are tender.
  • Remove from heat and stir in cilantro.
  • Serve over white rice and garnish with remaining cilantro.
